This video is the second half of the Atkins Diet Misconception: Diabetes series. If you have not seen Part 1, please watch it here:
The last video dealt with case ing the existing treatment or recommendations to follow a high carb diet managed with ever increasing doses of insulin. This video deals with the evidence for rather managing it with a low carb lifestyle. There are two great studies for advocating this method.
1:) Dietary carbohydrate restriction in type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome: time for a critical appraisal
Nutrition and Metabolism(Lond) 2008; 5: 9.
Numerous authors including Richard Bertstein, Mary Vernon, Jeff Volek, Eric Westman

Conducted Multi-center trial in which 63 obese men and women were randomly igned to either diet, 21 Low Carb, 21 Control, 21 High Carb for a one year study.
This discussion focuses on type 2 diabetes but many of the principles will apply to metabolic syndrome and possibly to type 1 as well[6,7].
1. Carbohydrate restriction improves glycemic control, the primary target of nutritional therapy and reduces insulin fluctuations.
2. Carbohydrate-restricted diets are at least as effective for weight loss as low-fat diets.
3. Substitution of fat for carbohydrate is generally beneficial for markers for and incidence of CVD.
4. Carbohydrate restriction improves the features of metabolic syndrome.
An important idea guiding current medical thinking is that clustering of seemingly disparate physiologic states, obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension, termed metabolic syndrome (MetS) suggests a common underlying cause. A recent review showed that carbohydrate restriction improves all of these markers[24].
5. Beneficial effects of carbohydrate restriction do not require weight loss. It’s not simply a weight loss argument or due to people losing weight do they achieve the benefits.
2.) Low-carbohydrate diet in type 2 diabetes: stable improvement of bodyweight and glycemic control during 44 months follow-up

Conclusion:
There is now little evidence for the claim that a fat-reduced diet for weight reduction has any particular value beyond caloric counting [10]. Current dietary recommendations seem to be a major part of their problem rather than being part of the solution. Carbohydrate restriction, however, reverses or neutralises all aspects of the metabolic syndrome [20,21].

Atkins was one of …
Atkins was one of the first to recognize the impact of GI values, but one problem with most GI diets is that they ignore the glycemic load problems. That is it really doesn’t matter if the carbs are low GI if you are eating 300g at one meal. The impact can be the same to one’s glucose levels.

Loved ones have …
Loved ones have been lost in alot of familys. My partner lost his brother over diabetes. The real problem is that in our society we are taught carbs are good in high doses and they are not… they make us obese. In October I was 26 1/2 stone and with atkins and exercise, although I eat no dairy produce, I now weight 18 stone. I am thankful but I dedicate my day to losing weight. I want to get to 9 1/2 stone and hopefully will have surgery for lose skin. Thanks for helping us!

I am astounded by …
I am astounded by the science out there. That 8% low carb vs high carb 80% suffering from CVD over the course 44 month study astounded me. You are very welcome.

“You are exactly at the same age I was when I started.”
I got goosebumps! Tim, you can do this!

Thanks man!

Glad to see you …
Glad to see you still watching and commenting, Tim. That was what sold me – the flavor on this diet. There is no reason to feel deprived or to go second best for long on this diet. It was easy and simple. (just eat my veggies, drink my water, and in a few months sit less and move more).
You are exactly at the same age I was when I started. Good to see you posting again, and keep believing it can be done.

Good job! I don’t …
Good job! I don’t understand how people still can claim this is a heart unfriendly diet honestly in light of all the information out there. There are too many anecdotes like yours and mine, and studies to the contrary. Commit yourself to doing the diet right (no low carb bars or junk food) for 4 weeks straight, and then make your own call.
Keep spreading the good news!

I definitely could …
I definitely could have been that person as well. You go for so long and just try to accept yourself and believe that is just the way it is not realizing you have a chance to reclaim your life back. Sorry to hear about your friend’s passing.

I’ve always like …
I’ve always like your videos but these two about misconceptions is what I needed. I just joined TOPS as a form of support and I was going over some of the sample plans they have and I just hate eating a bunch of low fat tasteless stuff and having to be so regimented in counting the calories. Thanks again man and keep up the good work.
P.S. Great pics, I can only dream of seeing the changes you’ve seen.

my triglicerides …
my triglicerides were off the scale when I first went in to the doctor.. I refused the medication for triglicerides but started a very low carb diet… and within 6 weeks, my triglicerdies were well within a healthy range. I AM A BELIEVER. !! I eat bacon, full cream, cream cheese, cheese, and fatty meats.. My doctor did not believe I could do this. My suggestion is to try it.. be tested.. try the diet.. and see for yourself! It works!

Had a friend just die after dieting low fat for ten years. She weighed 391 pounds. She refused to listen against what her Doctor and the media said about Atkins.
