This video comes out of another myth that gets propagated out by Atkins Diet bashers that somehow we are more likely to get diabetes by following low carb. Certainly there is no shortage of misinformation on the web:
http://www.atkinsexposed.org/atkins/122/Nutritionists_Warn_Diabetics_to_be_Wary_of_Atkins_Diet.htm
http://www.diabetesuffolk.com/LivingWithDiabetes/The%20Atkins%20diet.htm
Some say we are dangerous for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics. Some just type 1 diabetics, but it really couldn’t be further from the truth. As all people, ESPECIALLY diabetics, could benefit from controlling blood glucose levels by carbohydrate monitoring or restriction.
There are two major proponents for Low Carb for diabetics:
Richard Bernstein, Type 1 Diabetic since 1946

Author of THE DIABETES DIET and Diabetes Solution
Mary Ross Vernon
Chairman of the board, American Society of Bariatric Physicians
Co-Author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution with Robert Atkins

2007 and 2008 Runner Up for Diabetic Educator of the Year Award
Mary Ross Vernon has been controlling diabetes with an Very Low Carb Diet (similar to Atkins Diet) for many years. She says both her Type 1 and Type 2 patients have benefited from carbohydrate restriction. She also notes that seeking quality physicians to handle the dramatic decrease in insulin requirements is paramount as some patients could be medication free in 3 days! See the attached quote (http://rjr10036.typepad.com/askdrvernon/2007/05/ron_of_sarasota.html).
Recently a number of studies have been released to support this position as well. One of the most notable for describing the failure of the existing recommendation of high carb and regulating with increasing doses of insulin is the study released in 2005 Nutrition and Metabolism magazine, “The case for low carbohydrate diets in diabetes management.” (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1188071&tool=pmcentrez) They detail that the high carbohydrate diet has lead to worse glycemic control, dislipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). They noted in their review of studies that the low carb followers showed dramatic improvement in comparison to the high carb followers.

I give my thank you …
I give my thank you for posting this video. I personally have a hard time explaining why I think dropping carbs would help diabetic patients. I wish the world was more informed on individual macro nutrients.
I read Gary Taubes last year helped me understand the insulin pathway much better. I wish my recall of it was better since its been a few years since I read it. Since my brain injury my recall is not so great. Luckily much much better then when I was first released from the hospitals.

Thanks SO MUCH for speaking the TRUTH regarding carbohydrates and it’s relation to type II diabetes!

Thanks for …
Thanks for commenting and letting know there is life post-Atkins if they determine its not for them. Diabetes is definitely insidious, and the real shocker is that up to 2008, the actual recommendations was causing more problems than helping.

The Atkins Diet works great for my diabetes!

I’m not on Atkins …
I’m not on Atkins anymore. I have to follow a low-fat diet to keep my calories down, but I still watch my carbs. My diet is meat, dairy, and vegetables for the most part. I am at risk for diabetes (I take after my Dad) and I don’t want to go there. I do eat fairly high protein, but I have no kidney issues to worry about. I just watch total calories and net carbs,

Yep, the medical …
Yep, the medical establishment has completely lost their way regarding low carb. There are some enlightened people doing great work or following the new studies (like your doctor), and then some who are so entrenched in the “old” ways, which are relatively recent historically speaking.
It might take one or two generations of medical school doctors to correct this low fat myth. Gary Taubes is certainly helping expose the myths in current thinking.
Thanks for watching!

I was borderline …
I was borderline when I started this diet, and knew if I didn’t do anything I was heading straight to being a diabetic like my grandmother. I almost got mad by the end of the research about the hypocrisy of the ADA prior to 2008. We are concerned about the possibility of CVD due to high saturated fat (more myths), but people are DYING from CVD with our low fat recommendation.
Thanks for watching and commenting… Now how do I get into your nutrition hall of fame?
