In this the second half of the stall series, I deal with what should be the reaction of those who aren’t losing inches or pounds for more than 4 weeks. Note: these are not for those that had a bad week or didn’t lose in the last two week.

Here’s a synopsis on what to try:
1. Take your measurements (make sure you are in a stall)
2. Start a food diary (Fitday, SparkPeople)
3. Evaluate what you are eating
4. Tweak exercise – “try 5″
5. Cut out certain groups (dairy, aspartame, caffiene, newly tried food groups)
6. Post your menu’s at online support group sites
7. Fasting diet (Fat Fast or Stillman’s Diet) for those with extreme metabolically resistance

Low-carbohydrate diets are nutritional programs that advocate restricted carbohydrate consumption. Low carb diets are based on the principle that a diet low in carbohydrates leads to decreased production of body’s insulin, resulting in consumption of fat stores as energy source. Low-carb diets are usually higher in fat. And fat takes longer to digest, which makes you feel fuller longer. Most low-carb diets reduce your overall calorie intake because they strictly limit the variety of foods you can eat.
Carbohydrates — including bread, pasta, rice, cereals, milk, fruit and sweets — usually supply over half of people’s daily calories. Many carbohydrate-containing foods are loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and other substances that promote health. While eliminating “white” carbs, such as white bread, white rice and white pasta, is fine to do, incorporating whole grains, fruits and other natural carbs is essential. And while you do need carbohydrates, take in moderation if there is little or no weight loss cut the carbs.

I felt like a wreck. Hyper, irritable and had to go back eating carbs to ward off a very awful, physical craving.

Over a period of 20 years, 3-4 times I did an Adkins/ No (very low) Carbs diet with no problems, no adverse sensations and excellent weight loss.
I just quit the diet (about the only one I can do, due to lifestyle) because this feeling of going half crazy was too much. I really have done well with Adkins and it has never presented a problem before.
Besides a small amout of discipline, it was pretty easy to stay on and in terms of losing weight, it was very effective. Lost 10-15 lbs a month. It didn’t go so well this last time

Has anyone experienced this same thing? No carbs, feel like you’re
youre going to shoot someone if you dont eat a Big Mac?

You cannot sustain a high protein, low carb diet for too long. Your body is not built for that type of diet.

The reason you have irratability, mood swings and want to kill for a big mac is because your body is crying out for energy! Try slightly more carbs and slightly less protein and you will feel better. Try high fibre foods to make you feel fuller for longer.

Excessively high amounts of protein has been linked to psychotic episodes on rare occaisons.

Weight loss of 10-15 lbs a month is too much too quick. Sensible diet and sensible excercise is still the best routine.

when i started dieting i was doing the adkins to like detox which i lost a lot of weight doing thios, but then i started counting colories which ive been doing for like 4 months. but since i got better results with the adkins i wanna go back on it but whenever i do i get tightness in my chest and get scared and stop is this normal? because it didnt happen before at the beginning

You mean Atkins. No the Atkins diet is not a healthy diet, tho the tightness in your chest could just be gas from eating all that protein. Going into ketosis is not healthy for you but a more moderate low carb diet is a good way to loose body fat. Actually just eating the right carbs is all that really matters. Try just eating normally(not counting calories) and don't eat anything that wouldn't have been available to a cave man. Definitely don't consume any msg, high fructose corn syrup, or trans fat. Also try to stay clear of bread(unless it's flowerless), cereal, and fruit juice. Look up the glycemic index and eat carbs that have a low GI or low GL.

By the way, people do loose weight on the Atkins diet, which is why it's a fairly popular diet. What the Atkins followers don't realize is that they're getting caught up in their scales; the weight they loose turns out to be mostly water and lean mass which actually primes you to gain fat in the future. It's bad news.

Is this normal? I eat veggies and all my water.

I did that diet before and lost 17 lbs the first two weeks (I also included exercise). Gained every pound back after I quit though. I have found the best and most effective weight loss program is exercise. From what I remember about that diet there were no carbs allowed in the first two weeks, that includes all fruit and vegetables. It was strictly protein. Atkins is a fantastic "destination diet", meaning that it's great to drop a few unwanted pounds quickly, but in the long run it is no an effective or healthy way to maintain a good weight.

A profile of Dr. Robert Atkins, the diet doctor diet whose theories on nutrition have changed the way Americans think about eating. Atkins’s low-carb approach and 4-step program have become an obsession for many people at a time when two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. But the Atkins diet has its detractors, some of whom say that its emphasis on high-cholesterol foods can make it dangerous.

Dr. Adkins died a fat man…do I really need to say more? Carbs=energy…do people really want to not have energy? I know several people that followed high-carb diets and lost weight! They weren't lethargic either…
To some of you…chill! I'm not attacking people that try to use it. Sorry for the misspelling of his name…I could swear I saw some diet foods at the grocery spelled that way. As for people that seek to lose 50+lbs. any semi-positive diet reform will probably work. I'm just concerned with the idea that the long-term effects of the diet may be detrimental. Personally, I'm a vegetarian not seeking to lose weight, so please don't attack me…I'm just wondering if it's the bandwagon of diets or if people can really live this lifestyle continually without having terrible health problems in the future as a result. After losing the weight is this diet still followed or do users simply follow a more conscientious menu? I do not condone starvation methods!

I am not going to acknowledge the how Dr. Atkins died. However, I will say that if you read and learn about the WHOLE concept behind the Atkins low carb lifestyle, you will see that it works and understand the science behind it.

Most people just want a quick fix and associate the induction phase of Atkins as the entire diet. There are different phases that you go through as you progress.

Atkins and all diets are about eating the right foods. Foods consist of either carbohydrates, protien or fat. Eating the right mix of these is the key.

Atkins advocates controlling the intake of carbs and eating the right fats. There are different types of carbs depending on the absorption rate into the blood stream. There is a tool called the glycemic index to help you determine the absorption rate. Typically, the lower the rate the better. See the source below.

I used the Atkins approach and lost 60 pounds. I still live the low carb lifestyle and have maintained my weight for over two years.

Ultimately, it is about calories taken in and burned. Regardless of which diet you choose, you should get on some sort of a light exercise plan. Changing your diet will help you lose weight. However, exercise and diet will jump start it.

I would recommend doing some research for yourself. You should have a full understanding of any diet plan. For any diet to be effective, it has to be a lifestyle change. I would also consult a doctor before starting for a general checkup and bloodwork. This way you can compare your results later down the road.

Breakfast- 5 pieces of sugar free bacon.
Snack- sugar free jello cup with whipped cream.
lunch- piece of turkey breast, slice of cheese and 5 olives.
dinner- 6 oz. fillet (steak) steamed cauliflower
i have lost 13 pounds, this is like my 4th week. and i have stopped losing weight over 4 days ago. i eat very low carb.

While I am a big fan of restricting carbs when trying to lose body fat, I don't really agree with Atkin's recommendations.

However, this seems really low calorie. Congrats on losing the initial weight but the low calories has slowed your bodies metabolism down therefore your stall.

But as I said, I'm not up on the specifics of the programs (Atkins) calorie recommendations. A good rule of thumb is to multiply your current weight (or if you are extremely overweight, your "goal" weight) by 12. That answer would be approximately how many calories a person should eat to safely lose fat.

good luck!

Is there only one shot at the Atkins Diet success? In this video, I deal with the “Golden Shot” theory (http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/goldenshot.html), which states that the first time is always the easiest time to lose weight with low carb.

While I acknowledge that the body can react differently over time to food and thereby make it tougher (or easier) to lose weight, the same processes and rules that worked the first time should work each and every time. Your CCLL numbers may change as you age or have different activity levels, but the procedure for finding them and your reaction to the number stays the same. You can be as successful the second time as the first. The goal should be long term health and keeping the weight off, so figure out what went wrong the first time, i.e. what caused you to get off the diet and return to old ways of eating.

Second timers who have regained their weight since losing the first time should in fact have a leg up on first timers as they should already know the program, know the rules, and have keen interest to learning how to keep the weight off this time. The thought of the Golden Shot seems just a bit off to me as well as it just serves to feed self-doubt and set one up for failure. You CAN succeed at this diet whether it be your first or third attempt.
