There are several diets out there, but I can't keep track of which is the healthiest. My brother is doing the Atkins friendly-low carb diet and I am terribly worried about him. His diet includes high calorie and high fat foods and he has little physical fitness. Is this low carb diet actually healthy?

Do you have any suggestions I can give him?
Or maybe I am wrong and the Atkins diet is healthy, please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

The healthiest diet to follow is one with lean meats (not high fat) plenty of vegetables and lean meats. Atkins is actually really good at giving you a heart attack and most doctors won't recommend it. Carbohydrates give your body necessary fuel. Fats are also necessary, but the healthiest places to find them are in olive oil and fish oils. Fatty ground beef, for example, is not the healthiest meat choice you could make. Get a good variety of lots of healthy, non-processed foods in your diet to make sure you're getting all of the nutrients necessary for life.

Anywhere from 1800-2000 calories a day is healthiest for women, around 2000 a day is healthiest for men. Regular exercise is a must.

I have PCOS and have been trying to lose weight by exercising and eating healthy, I didn't know if a low carb diet would work?

Although there is no cure for PCOS, some women, including myself, have found a great deal of success by controlling the amount of carbohydrates that they consume each day. This type of treatment springs from the idea that PCOS and insulin resistance are linked. Not only do women who follow a carbohydrate-controlled diets lose weight, but they also find that their other symptoms, anovulation, hirisutism, and acne, improve as well. I have found controlling carbohydrates to be enormously beneficial to the improvement of my own symptoms.

I'm starting to working out again and I want to lose about 60lbs but I can't figure out which is best to do a low calorie diet or a low carb diet.

Low Carb Plans DON'T WORK.

You'll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with low carb menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW for average people. Low carb menus tend to rob your body of too much energy (carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.

Low Calorie Diets DON'T WORK.

You won't lose weight using a Low Calorie Dieting Plan either. In fact, eating low calories is the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body's fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight (low calorie diets may allow a few pounds of weight loss for the first few days, but then after that all weight loss comes to a halt — known as a dieting plateau). You can never get slim by starving yourself.

eg. atkins.

nuts are low carb aren't they?

They are low in carbs, but most have a high fat content so you should eat them sparingly.

like when your on a low carb diet, what are you suppose to eat? certain meats, what breads are lower carbs, etc….? also should you eat lots of fruits and vegtables when trying to lose body fat?

Hi kks,

In general, you should avoid the “starchy” or “white foods” that are staples in many diets. These include breads, rice, and potatoes. Most meats are fine, but some would argue that meats too high in fat and cholesterol should be avoided. I think most low carb diets include some allowance for vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, okra, pumpkin, and zucchini. There are also many low carb diets that allow you to eat a fair amount of cheese.

Hope this helps!
